The Office of the President is recruiting a Senior Analyst to join the HNx team to further develop the research and policy capabilities of the project and to take an active part in the expansion of the Platform. The main purpose of this new position is to provide advanced analytical capabilities in humanitarian negotiation and mediation.
Main responsibilities
- Gather and analyze information on trends, opportunities and challenges related to humanitarian negotiation and mediation across the ICRC and the larger humanitarian community.
- Develop a thorough analysis of ICRC negotiation practices at a technical, professional and strategic level based on HNx interviews of ICRC negotiators.
- Conduct interviews of ICRC negotiators as required by the research and policy needs of the project.
- Build an accessible and searchable database of information on humanitarian negotiation and mediation as well as HNx analytical reports.
- Contribute to the development of policy tools and methods on the planning and evaluation of humanitarian negotiation and mediation.
- Establish contacts and maintain relationships with academic and policy circles engaged in negotiation policy and research.
Background and experience
- Master's degree in international relations, political science, law or equivalent.
- Solid experience in political and social analysis with a particular focus on conflict mediation and international affairs.
- Good understanding of the humanitarian system and trends affecting humanitarian affairs.
- More than eight years of professional experience working in government, academia, international organizations or international NGOs.
- Confirmed field experience in humanitarian negotiation an asset.

- Proven ability to think critically, succinctly and creatively
- Capacity to work independently under pressure with tight deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation skills, and capacity to work effectively in a small team
- Excellent writing, editing and analytical skills, and ability to translate complex questions into policy options leading to practical recommendations
- Fluent in English and French (Spanish and/or Arabic would be an asset)
- Available for short field missions.
Position in the hierarchy
The Senior Analyst reports to the head of HNx Project and Strategic Advisor to the President. This is a mobile post based in Geneva, with the possibility of conducting short field missions.
Length of assignment: 2 years-assignment with possibility of extending to 3 years
