The ICRC Somalia Delegation in Nairobi implements the institution's humanitarian activities in Somalia and is seeking for an experienced and motivated person to fill the position of: COMMUNICATION FIELD OFFICER; GAROWE.
Function description
Assists the delegation, the ICRC office and the communication coordinator in specific dissemination and information/communication projects and programs independently Implements the activities under the supervision of the communication coordinator and the Head of Office Conducts field trips and performs dissemination sessions to mid-level interlocutors Collects, analyses and reports relevant information on the situation Elaborates written reporting on the activities and contributes to the Weekly Operation Highlight (WOR) Maintains contact and communicate with mid-level interlocutors Applies and follows administrative and logistical procedures Ensures daily Somali media environment scanning and analysis Provides regular reporting on Communication Activities
Main Responsibilities: • Raise awareness of the ICRC, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) towards all ICRC's target populations • Organize and conduct briefings, dissemination sessions, workshops, seminars and public relations events • Advise on the socio-political and economic environment, which can influence ICRC's operations • Performs independent research and analysis on ICRC perception • Distributes communication materials to interlocutors and target populations as required • Supports communication activities of the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) Participates in the preparing newsworthy information materials (press releases, newsletter, fact sheets, pictures) Monitors the media, and collect and file press cuttings When requested by the Com Coordinator, assists in organizing press briefings and field visits for journalists Supports the communication functions of ICRC's operational departments Participates in briefing and training ICRC staff members Assist in developing dissemination materials when required. Ensures management of the communication of the office When is required, conducts briefing of all new staff Conceptualizes and develop communication strategy towards target populations. Identifies and contact key interlocutors when is required with a view to promoting ICRC's activities Updates the department's interlocutors list Keeps track on pending issues and inform the communication team and the Coordinator about them Keeps and update the communication filing system Assists the activities of SRCS Field Officers through constant contact, advice and support Keeps the department and the office informed of events in the region as they unfold Daily monitoring of the Media Prepare the situation analysis to the Weekly Operation Highlight (WOR) When requested, drafts or finalises internal and external communications documents (letters, MoM's, field/dissemination reports) when required Manages the office library Keep and update the communication statistics for the office
Minimum requirements:
University degree in communications or related field (knowledge of IHL is an asset) 3-4 years professional experience in same or similar field of activity Very good command of Somali and English, written and spoken Ability to translate English to Somali and Somali to English Good computer skills and good command of standard Microsoft Office tools Excellent communication and presentation skills Excellent analytical and writing skills Ability to work autonomously and demonstrate initiative Good knowledge of the political, social and cultural assigned environment Good leadership and management skills Flexible, motivated and reliable self-starter personality, good sense of responsibility and organization, ability to travel in all parts of the country Good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
