Switzerland: ICRC Traineeship in the Restoring Family Links and Missing Persons Unit, Protection Division

Background

Every year, thousands of family members are separated by migration, conflicts, or disasters. People suffer terribly when they lose contact with their loved ones and don't know where they are or whether they are safe.
The ICRC and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies work together around the world to locate people, maintain and restore contact between family members, reunite unaccompanied and separated children with their families, and seek to clarify the fate of those who remain missing

Primary responsibilities

The post holders contribute to the work of the Central Tracing Agency and Protection Division on questions related to Restoring Family Links (RFL) and Missing Persons, under the supervision of the Head of the RFL_Missing Unit and under the technical supervision of the RFL and Missing Advisors.

1) Public Communication Related to the RFL & MISSING Files

  • Contribute to the content management and developmentof the Family Links Website (familylinks.icrc.org)
  • Contribute to the management of the new Family Links Extranet (FL Extranet), the Protection Toolbox and other databases and platforms
  • Contribute to the development, publication, and dissemination of didactic, communication and promotional materials
  • Participate in the organisation and management of internal and external trainings on issues related to RFL/MISSING.
  • Participate in the conception of the RFL Strategy 2018
  • Participate in the development and organisation of events and promotional material

2) Research and Writing on Thematic Developments in RFL/MISSING Files

  • Research issues related to the RFL and MISSING files and synthesise information for the purpose of contributing to communication and training materials, the intranet and extranet, and various databases.
  • Contribute to the development of documents on specific topics related to RFL/Missing
  • Analyse operational practices of the ICRC and the Movement with respect to RFL/MISSING for purposes of contributing to the production of case studies and the different strategies designed by the unit.

3) Operations of the RFL/MISSING Unit

  • Participate in organization of internal and external meetings
  • Contribute to the drafting of letters and emails intended for internal and external audiences.
  • Support the Protection Division with any other tasks as needed.

Skills and experience

Required:

  • Master's Degree (ideally in communications, digital communication, social sciences, law, political science, international relation and /or Master's Degree in Humanitarian Action.
  • Ability to draft documents with short deadlines
  • Experience or skills in information management, particularly for internet/intranet/extranet purposes
  • Previous experience with a National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society, international organizations, or an NGO.
  • Strong research and writing abilities, with the focus to invest in a long-term project
  • Experience in event planning and organization, especially in a multi-cultural environment

Desirable Assets:

  • Advanced skills in Excel or other data analysis tool and experience in the collection, processing, and analysis of statistical data
  • Knowledge on designing surveys or questionnaires and publishing them in an online format (i.e SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics)

Qualifications

Required:

  • Excellent knowledge of English, both oral and written (working proficiency in French or Spanish an advantage)
  • A team player, with good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in humanitarian action and the ICRC
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to research, analyze, and synthesize information
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely (written and oral)
  • Good level of autonomy and time management
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Maximum professional experience (including internships/fellowships): 2 years

Desirable Assets:

Experience with information management tools such as Sharepoint or Lotus Notes

Contract

The recruited candidate will be offered a one-year contract.
The position is remunerated and based in Geneva.
Expected starting date of traineeship: 15.03.2017
